Brief notes on the Monferrato from the site of the Piedmont Region:
Among the most scenic routes, able to mix a landscape of rolling hills with historical relevance of first, city of great charm and small settlements dominated by castles, fine wines and delicacies, arises what passes through the extensive territory of the Monferrato. The Monferrato, in fact, land rich in history and tradition, combines landscape largely intact in its original characters and commercial offer: Valencia gold at Terme di Acqui, hats of Alexandria chocolate Novi, by Gavi wines to those of Asti, Canelli, Vignale, Casale.
But what of Monferrato is primarily a landscape of castles in a landscape of vineyards and here's an idea of route between castles and hills starting from the Basso Monferrato, whose capital, Casale Monferrato, shows marked by the castle Palaeologan, austere mirror the events of Monferrato and the bitter fighting for control of this fertile strip of Piedmont. Following is the castle of San Giorgio Monferrato, built to block the Saracen wave that threatened the Piedmont in the tenth century, fief in 1152 by Frederick Barbarossa to the bishop of Vercelli, while going up into the hills, in Vignale Monferrato, you can visit the old manor house that is now home to a major wine. The Basso Monferrato also boasts one of the most beautiful castles in Italy, to Camino. Known for its frescoed halls (including the central hall with frescoes by Pier Francesco Guala between 1746 and the following year), ancient courtyards and park, Today is a magnificent setting for ceremonies and cultural events, as well as for film and advertising. No less noteworthy is the castle of Lignano, among the oldest in the area, that has preserved frescoed halls with the coats of arms of the family Grisella. We should also mention the castle at Uviglie Rosignano Monferrato, from whose top you can admire one of the most beautiful views of the Piedmont. Of ancient origin, significantly transformed by action of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, 1992 became Winery, has been able to revive the cultivation of vines as the fine Doc Barbera del Monferrato, Grignolino of Casale Monferrato, Monferrato Freisa and Piedmont Chardonnay.
In between Piedmont and Liguria, begins the Alto Monferrato, characterized by three zones: the Acquese, the seat of the capital of this section of Monferrato, Acqui note, land of Moscato and Brachetto with numerous archaeological sites of Roman origin to visit; the Ovadese, with Ovada with high hills dotted with medieval castles (a Rocca Grimalda, Bormida, Tagliolo, Trisobbio) and Dolcetto vineyards and l ';area of Novi and Gavi, with its strong, famous for the typical white wine and craft confectionery. A manor significant is the castle of Salabue in Ponzano, much loved by the military strategists because it contains precious documents of the First and Second World War and correspondence of General Diaz, Badoglio, Cadorna and Foch. For ovadese instead it is worth remembering Castle Prasco, result of substantial interventions of the fifteenth century on an original nucleus of XII, which is not far from the Botanical Garden of the Almond.
